ABOUT digital tv

How will the switch from analogue to digital affect me?

By the year 2013 all analogue signals in Australia will be switched off and replaced with digital-only signals. There’s a variety of reasons and benefits behind why we must make the switch to digital television, including:

An improved viewing experience

Digital television provides for a much more satisfying viewing experience with improvements to the picture, sound quality, the same free-to-air channels and the addition of a number of new ones! For example, the Seven, Nine and Ten networks have all introduced high definition digital channels. Network Ten launched ONE, a digital-only sports channel, the Nine Network introduced GO! and the Seven Network launched channel 7TWO. The ABC has introduced ABC2 and ABC3, and SBS has SBS TWO in digital.

Worldwide changes to technology

At present there are a number of overseas programs that are now only recorded in the digital format and to remain at the same technological pace as the rest of the world, Australian TV shows are now being recorded in the digital format for easy exportation overseas.

Australia’s broadcast space

Television in Australia is currently broadcast in both digital and analogue signals, a situation which is both expensive and inefficient. In 2013 when Australia switches off the analogue signals, a large amount of space will be freed for other community services.
